1 SAMUEL 4:12-8:22

1Samuel 5:1 After the Philistines captured the Ark of God, they took it from the battleground at Ebenezer to the town of Ashdod. They carried the Ark of God into the temple of Dagon and placed it beside an idol of Dagon. But when the citizens of Ashdod went to see it the next morning, Dagon had fallen with his face to the ground in front of the Ark of the Lord! So they took Dagon and put him in his place again. But the next morning the same thing happened—Dagon had fallen face down before the Ark of the Lord again. This time his head and hands had broken off and were lying in the doorway. Only the trunk of his body was left intact.

False gods cannot stand in the face of the true God. How often does He knock down our false idols and we just keep picking them back up again. Even when he breaks them to pieces we still hold onto them.

The real question is do we move away from Him as the Philistines send the Ark of the Covenant away.

1Samuel 8:19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel’s warning. “Even so, we still want a king,” they said. 20 “We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will judge us and lead us into battle.”

The Israelites ask for a king. Even after they are warned by a prophet of God.

Putting our trust in a human no matter how great or powerful that person is will never live up to the peace and confidence that comes from faith in the One True God.
