Joshua 6:13 NIV

[13] The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding.

I imagine that when the Israelites started marching, the people of Jerico were shaking in their sandals. We know that everyone had heard the stories of what God had done for them and they were frightened. That is why the gates to the city were locked. Day one would have been a time of fear. They would be anticipating the attack. When it didn't happen, I would think it would be very confusing.

Joshua 6:14 NIV

[14] So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.

Then it happened again and again. Each day there had to be a little less trepidation. They probably started to let their defenses down. I can imagine after about three days they would start talking among themselves. "Look at these fools." "What are they going to accomplish marching around the wall?" "Were we afraid of them?" "We have nothing to worry about." I could even see them start to laugh at them and mock them.

Joshua 6:15-16 NIV

[15] On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. [16] The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!

Why seven days? The number 7 is the number of perfection. The number of God. God knew the perfect amount of time needed for the Israelites to be ready but also for the people of Jerico to be ready. They are probably relaxed, confident, defenses down. Or maybe it had nothing to do with them at all. It could just be that the seventh time was God's time. It was God who was going to give them victory. We know that victory does belong to the Lord. And He made sure that the Israelites and the people of Jerico knew it.
