Mark 6:5-6 NLT

[5] And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. [6] And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people.

Example after example in the bible of Jesus saying that their faith has healed them. Here we see the confirmation that faith is required. Unbelieve blocks miracles. I'm not surprised that Jesus' family, friends and neighbors had difficulty believing in Jesus. They knew how human He was. They knew Him as a baby and watched Him grow up. How could a human that they knew be able to do all the things people were saying. And He is surely not the Messiah. He was only able to heal a few sick people. Makes me think that they were probably so desperate to be healed they were willing to try anything and were hopeful and that was received as faith.

Mark 6:56 NLT

[56] Wherever he went—in villages, cities, or the countryside—they brought the sick out to the marketplaces. They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.

Then we have people who only knew what they heard and saw about Jesus. They heard the stories and saw the things that He was doing. Either they saw Him do miracles or knew people who were healed or were present at His miracles. It is easier for them to have a faith that is so strong that even a touch of His clothing could heal Him.

I wonder if that is one of the reasons why some people who grow up in a church that focuses on works instead of on focusing on relationship with Jesus, have difficulty trusting in Jesus and His ability to love, forgive and heal. Just a thought that came to me as I was writing. Faith comes from experience. Experience and relationship are interdependent. Works based faith is self-focused and limits the power of God. How can you have faith in God if you have to do the work. It makes me think about the fact that Catholics have a crucifix not a cross. An empty cross focuses on the victory and power of Christ and His deity. Jesus on the cross only shows His humanity. How can you have faith in a human?
