Matthew 20:15-16 NIV

[15] Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ [16] “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

Matthew 20:25-26, 28 NIV

[25] Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. [26] Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,

[28] just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

I was struck by the back-to-back messages that result in the last will be first and the first will be last and the servant (least) will become the greatest.

I think they are the same message. It immediately took me to Revelation in my mind.

Revelation 22:13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

Jesus is the first and the last, servant (least) and Lord (greatest). Then I read "just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” When Jesus came to earth it was to become the sacrifice for our sins. He humbled Himself and suffered and died for us. At the same time He was also the same God who was there at the beginning of time and will be there at the end of time. Jesus is all things. We can't be all things. We are not God. We can't be a servant and master. We cannot be the last and first. That is something only Jesus can do. Jesus' life here on earth was our example of how we are to be here on this earth. Humble servants. When we join Him in eternity then we will experience His perfection and our humility will be the source of greatness and position.

Revelation 22:13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
