Psalms 47:1-2 NIV

[1] Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. [2] For the Lord Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth.

When I read this I had a picture of children jumping up and down, clapping their hands, and crying out in uncontrollable joy because they are so excited and happy about something. About our great God. It's like they are bubbling over with joy.

Psalms 47:2-9 NIV

[2] For the Lord Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth. [3] He subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet. [4] He chose our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob, whom he loved. [5] God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets. [6] Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. [7] For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. [8] God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. [9] The nobles of the nations assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted.

Then we get to see what they are clapping about. Who they are clapping about. The greatest person that they could ever know. The most powerful person they could ever know. The most loving persons they could ever know. The only person worthy of their great shouts of joy. They burst into songs of praise because they can't help themselves. We need to worship and praise God like that.

This made me wonder how other translations looked or sounded. In my mind it's a picture that I can hear. Thought I would share some other versions with you so that you might hear it better as well.

Here is the Message version that is pretty popular as well as the Easy version that is written at a 6th grade reading level. Both are paraphrases that make it easier to understand. I hope that they paint a picture of praise that inspires you to Shout to the Lord!

Psalms 47:1-9 MSG

[1-9] Applause, everyone. Bravo, bravissimo! Shout God-songs at the top of your lungs! God Most High is stunning, astride land and ocean. He crushes hostile people, puts nations at our feet. He set us at the head of the line, prize-winning Jacob, his favorite. Loud cheers as God climbs the mountain, a ram’s horn blast at the summit. Sing songs to God, sing out! Sing to our King, sing praise! He’s Lord over earth, so sing your best songs to God. God is Lord of godless nations— sovereign, he’s King of the mountain. Princes from all over are gathered, people of Abraham’s God. The powers of earth are God’s— he soars over all.

Psalms 47:1-9 EASY

[1] People from every nation, clap your hands together. Shout aloud to God, with the sound of happy songs. [2] The Lord, the Most High God, is wonderful. He is the great King who rules over the whole earth. [3] He has won the battle against our enemies, and those nations are now under our power. [4] He chose a special land to belong to us. Jacob's descendants are proud of that land. They are his own people that he loves. [5] God has gone up to sit on his throne, while the people shout aloud. The Lord has gone up there, while the trumpets make a loud noise. [6] Sing to praise God! Yes, sing! Sing to praise our king! Sing! [7] God is the King who rules over the whole earth! So sing a special song to praise him! [8] God rules over the nations. God is sitting on his holy throne. [9] The leaders of the nations have met together. They have joined with the people who serve Abraham's God. God has authority over all the world's rulers and their armies. Everyone should praise him, for he is great!
