DEUTERONOMY 6:1-9:29

Deuteronomy 6:10 When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, 12 be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

Deuteronomy 8:16 He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17 You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

The Lord provides for them by giving them things that they did not earn. Things that belonged to other people or that came from God Himself. First, He rescued them from Egypt and provided for them by making the Egyptians generous with all the wealth they had. He provides for them with manna that was something no one else had ever seen before. And He gave them miraculous amounts of quail and water where it would not be found normally. Now he is about to bring them into a land that was settled and developed by other people. In v16 it says that He gave them manna to humble and test them. I think that when we take the time to really think about how God has provided for us it will humble us if it doesn't we fail the test. We live in a time where there is so much abundance and we often can feel that we are providing for ourselves but in truth it is God who "gives you the ability to produce wealth". Instead of becoming prideful when we are successful we need to give God the glory and be humbled at his provision.

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

~ Talk about them in your home, and when you walk along the road…When you lie down…
