DEUTERONOMY 16:18-21:9
Deuteronomy18:9 “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there. 10 For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, 11 or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead.
We live in a world that is full of detestable customs. We may not sacrifice our children as a burnt offering but we see children being murdered by abortion in heartbreaking numbers even among people who profess to be Christian. I used to think there was nothing wrong with going to a "psychic" and having my fortune told in fact in my late teens and early 20s it was a regular form of entertainment. I grew up with a Ouija board and there were "pretend" seances held in my house from the time I was a toddler through my teen years. When I gave my life to Jesus and started digging into the word of God and learning his truths, I came to learn how offensive this is to God. It was one of the things that early on I learned and thought "Wow, it says that in the bible?" I made the decision that I could not pick and choose what to believe in the bible. I believed all the stuff about Jesus before I gave my life to Him and when I started seeking His truth and studying His word I started learning that there were many thing in my life that I saw no harm in. I thought it was harmless and even normal because the world I lived in presented it that way. But as I studied, I had to decide that I believed ALL of God's word to be true and I had to decide to live by it. I still continue to learn more and better understand God's word as I continue to read and study. These verses reinforce for me the need to always be learning and studying because if we are not daily in the Word of God then the voice of the world will be louder than the voice of God in our lives. When that happens, we will be like the Israelites and fall into the detestable practice of the land we are living in. So, tune your life into the truth of God's Word and tune out the lies of the land we live in.
