November 6, 2026 -What are We Fighting About
“[1] What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? [2] You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. ”
James 4:1-2 NIV
What a slap in the face this is. We have a tendency to think that we are fighting because we know what is right or what is best. But when you really think about it, it comes down to what is best for me. It is what I think is right. Our opinions are always influenced by our desires. The only way to truly fight for what is right is for our desires to be right. We need to trust God and go to Him with our requests instead of trying to make things happen under our own power.
“[7] Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. [8] Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. ”
James 4:7-8 NIV
The only way our desires can be right is when we are fully submitted to God. Even when things are not going the way we want them we must trust that God who is sovereign knows what is best. Not us. Trusting in Him enough to fully submit means that the devil will have no power over our desires and thoughts because the enemy cannot occupy a space that God is present. When we are in the presence of God the devil not only can't be there he will flee. He too knows the greatness and power of God but because he will not submit he will run away. Allow the living water of Jesus Christ to wash over you as you move closer to God and He will cleans your body, heart and mind and your desires will line up with His. Then there is no need to fight over things. Let Him fight your battles and bask the greatness of His power.
