John 14:12 NIV

[12] Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

Doing the works that He has been doing. What has He been doing? Teaching, healing, caring & truth speaking are some of what He was doing. But the bigger picture is that He is doing whatever the Father tells Him to do. He is obedient and doing what He has been put on the earth to do. That is what we are to do. Jesus is now with the Father and He is our intercessor. Our advocate. He and the Father have known since before our creation why we are here on this earth. There is a plan and a purpose for our lives and we are to trust in God to walk us through it.

John 14:15-17 NIV

[15] “If you love me, keep my commands. [16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— [17] the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Jesus did leave us and go to the Father but He did not leave us alone. He sent us the Holy Spirit. Jesus is our advocate with the Father and the Sprit is our advocate here with us. They work together three in one, Father, Son & Spirit. That is how we can do the works that we have been placed here to do. That is how we can know His commands. How we can understand His commands. How we can follow His commands. We can't expect anyone who does not trust in Jesus to understand what we do or why and how we do it. And we cannot expect someone who doesn't trust in Jesus to follow His commands.

John 14:21 NIV

[21] Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

A heart surrendered to Jesus will be filled with love for Him. Our love will result in a desire to please Him. The more we seek to know Him and please Him the more He will show Himself to us. Many people hear the gospel and like what they hear and ask Jesus to save them but their hearts are not fully surrendered. For some it is just part of the growth process as the Spirit patiently convicts them one step at a time. But it seems that there are those who think that all they need to do is say that they believe in Jesus and they're done. But scripture tells us over and over that it's not just a matter of the head and mouth. It is a matter of the heart and the will. A heart that loves Jesus results in a will that wants to know and please Him.

John 14:23-24 NIV

[23] Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. [24] Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

Over and over again. Love = Obedience = Relationship & Intimacy with God. No Love = Disobedience = Separation from God

And obedience means surrendering our will to Him. Jesus asked for the path of the cross to be altered but His will was to please the Father and He was fully surrendered to the plan. Perhaps when Jesus says "Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, " it can be summed up as simply as love God, obey Him and surrender to His plan. I think everything else just falls into place.
