Ruth 2:8-9 NIV
[8] So Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. [9] Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.”
I love the story of Ruth and Boaz. Boaz is such an honorable man. He knows who Ruth is and recognizes how honorable she is. His response is that of protector. He immediately does everything he can to take care of her. He ensures her safety and protection.
Ruth 2:14-16 NIV
[14] At mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar.” When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted Boazand had some left over. [15] As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, “Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her. [16] Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her.”
He provides more than her needs by feeding her enough to have leftovers. Then he continues to provide for her. By having the stalks pulled out for her to collect extra he is providing more than her needs. This extra could even provide in income for Ruth and Naomi.
Ruth 2:20 NIV
[20] “The Lord bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.” She added, “That man is our close relative; he is one of our guardian-redeemers.”
Boaz knew that he was a close relative and a guardian-redeemer. A guardian-redeemer in ancient Israel was a blood relative responsible for protecting the interests of the family, including buying back land, freeing family members from debt slavery, or marrying a childless widow to produce an heir. Even before Ruth knew who he was Boaz took care of her. He protected her and provided for her. What a picture of Jesus. Even before we knew who Jesus was, He was proving for us and protecting us.
