John 17:1-3 NIV
[1] After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. [2] For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. [3] Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. [4] I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.
This prayer of Jesus is just packed full of things to look at. Jesus speaking to the Father for all to see. When Jesus prays out loud like this in front of people it is to reveal things to the hearers. He is genuinely praying this prayer, but it is out loud so that we can know about it. So we can learn from it and be encouraged by it. He starts off glorifying the Father. Being that He is God He rightly prays that the Father would glorify Him. This section feels to me like He is establishing His equality with the Father and His position and purpose. He is in authority over all people and His purpose is what gives people access to eternal life. And He goes further to explain what it means or what it takes to receive eternal life.
John 17:4 NIV
[4] I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.
I relate this back to when Jesus said that if we love Him, we will do what we see Him doing. We too can bring glory to God when we finish the work that He gives us to do.
John 17:5-10 NIV
[5] And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. [6] “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. [7] Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. [8] For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. [9] I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. [10] All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.
He begins to pray for all the disciples. He is affirming that they are no longer children of the world but they are children of God. God the Father and God the Son. He affirms that they know Him as God the Messiah sent as promised by the Father. What a blessing for them to hear that He is praying for them specifically. This prayer is not for all people. It is not for people of the world but only for those that belong to Jesus. What a sweet sound to hear Jesus say that glory has come to Him through those who follow Him.
John 17:11-19 NIV
[11] I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. [12] While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. [13] “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. [14] I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. [15] My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. [16] They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. [17] Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. [18] As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. [19] For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
He prays for their protection. |He shows them that prayer in His name has power. He says, "by the power of your name, the name you gave me". Of course, He wouldn't pray in Jesus' name but I think it is significant that He says that the power is in the Father's name which He gave to the Son. I don't know if I think that the name of the God head is Jesus as much as I think that this further supports that Jesus and the Father are one and that the power that is in Jesus' name is the full power of the God head. The Son had to be given a name and the name needed to speak to who He is. This makes me dig deeper into His name. Jesus's Biblical name is either Yeshua or Yehoshua means "God is salvation" or "God is my salvation." Check out the link below to listen to and/or read more about His name. It brings even more insight into the power of the name. As well as points out that Jesus is not the only name of the Son.
John 17:20-23 NIV
[20] “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, [21] that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. [22] I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— [23] I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
But wait! This prayer is not just for those He was speaking to at the time but for every believer for all time! That means that when you read this prayer every word and intent is for you as well. Prayer that the church will be united. All be one together but also one with God. "May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me." What a comfort and assurance to read that the ability of the world to believe that Jesus is salvation when they see us and hear us share the gospel is not because of us in any way. It is the fact that we are in God and it is only by His power to someone believes. There is no pressure on us to make someone believe.
John 17:24-26 NIV
[24] “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. [25] “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. [26] I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
He will continue to be made known through the love of God in us that is only there because we are one with Him. As post accension believers we also know that He is one with us because of the Spirit that lives in us. This is the first that I realized that even before Pentecost Jesus states that we are one with Him and therefore one with the Father. May you continue to make yourself known to the world through You love that is in me.
