John 18:5-6 NIV

[5] “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) [6] When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

When I read this, I was struck by the fact that those who came to take Jesus into custody "drew back and fell to the ground". These were Jews. When Jesus says "I am he" it is one of the I AM statements in the bible. I was reminded of my post from March 14 where I shared

"He is claiming equality with YHWH. The same word Jesus uses for "I am" is used in common speech but when used without a second part to the statement as in Exodus it is an "absolute" declaration of the word which then mirrors the word YHWH. There are 3 times in the gospel of John that Jesus does this.

  • “They saw Jesus walking on the sea… and they were frightened. But he said to them, “It is I ; do not be afraid.”” (John 6:19-20)

  • “Truly, truly I say to you: before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8:58)

  • “Jesus said to [the soldiers], “Whom do you seek?” They answered “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus answered “I am he.” … when Jesus said to them “I am he,” they retreated and fell to the ground… Jesus answered “I told you that I am he.”” (John 18:6-8)"

If you don't remember the post or you didn't get to read it before you can search the date or the words "I am" or go to the date.
