John 2:11 NIV

[11] What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

John 2:13-15 NIV

[13] When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. [14] In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. [15] So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

I was struck by the jump from Jesus first miracle to almost the end of His ministry. But John is not interested in chronology. The purpose of His Gospel is to prove Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. The first miracle shows His divinity and his power over nature. Then jumping to the cleansing of the temple shows His authority as Messiah and power over worship. He fulfills a prophecy and restores worship to what it was supposed to be.

John 2:18-22 NIV

[18] The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” [19] Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” [20] They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” [21] But the temple he had spoken of was his body. [22] After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

Jesus is called out on His actions and is asked to prove his authority, John points out that Jesus gives them the answer that will prove His power. But it doesn't make sense to any of them until after the resurrection.

John is demonstrating that Jesus proved Himself over and over again, but it could not be fully understood until after His resurrection. His goal throughout His gospel is to present us with all of that proof. I hope to keep that in mind as I read through the book of John.
