JEREMIAH 25:15-38

JEREMIAH 36:1-32

JEREMIAH 45:1-46:28

Jeremiah 46:28 Do not be afraid, Jacob my servant,

    for I am with you,” declares the Lord.

“Though I completely destroy all the nations

    among which I scatter you,

    I will not completely destroy you.

I will discipline you but only in due measure;

    I will not let you go entirely unpunished.”

As I read more and more prophecies of punishment and destruction, I had difficulty staying focused on the reading because it feels like so much of the same stuff. As soon as I would read "prophesy all these words against them" or anything to the effect it was like my brain would assume to already know everything that it was going to say and would wander away. And my primary thought was it's just too much to read this all in a row.

Then when I read these final words of today's reading, I had a sigh of relief. What a great assurance God gives. that He will only discipline "in due measure". And of course, He is the only one who would know the due measure. The true due measure is death and eternal separation from God but Jesus has paid the price to free us from what we deserve. So now the only due measure that we will suffer will be though this world's consequences. And in that He also will only allow us to suffer what is appropriate for us to come to recognize and repent from our sins. Thank you Jesus that we do not suffer the punishment we deserve because you have already paid that price.
