Psalms 59:16-17 NIV
[16] But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. [17] You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely.
Over and over again recently praising God in the midst of difficult times has been brought to my attention. In scripture, in my personal experience and in other sermons and teaching. This morning, I was reminded that it's not about the act. It is not the doing and saying of the words. It is about heart and experiences. So yes, I will sing praise to you. I will sing of all you are. Your strength and love. When I remember that you are my fortress, I will be able to release my worry because I know that I can rely on you. Worshiping God is not only done through song. We can worship Him in everything we do. We can trust in Him and His greatness by living out our praise in all that we do. When we live like we trust in God's greatness, love, sovereignty, strength and all the other awesome things that He is, then we are praising Him in all we do.
Mark 14:3 NIV
[3] While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.
This woman is worshiping Jesus in what she is doing. She is praising Him by doing something that is for Him without concern for what anyone else would think. She is laying down all that she has. She is willing to lay down her finances and reputation to honor Jesus.
Mark 14:37-38 NIV
[37] Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? [38] Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
But sometimes no matter how much we want to live in a way that is all about worship and praising Jesus, our flesh is weak and we will not do it right every time. But if we can remember to come back to Him in praise, we will be able to endure.
