1 Corinthians 4:1-4 NIV
[1] This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed. [2] Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. [3] I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. [4] My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me.
This does not mean to not care what other people think. I have very often said that I don't care what people think. I only care what God thinks. But that only applies to things that you are doing that align with scripture and things that God has called you to do or say. It does not mean that we can do anything that we want without regard to others. All you need to do is read scripture to know that. If what you are doing is not loving and does not align with God's word, then we are being a poor witness. Remember when Paul taught that there are things that are not prohibited for everyone. He said that if doing what is okay for you would cause someone else to stumble or doubt then don't do it. We don't want to do anything to hinder someone else's faith. Be it a believer or a non-believer. If we have the attitude that "it is the Lord who judges me" I think that should make us more concerned about what we say and do. What does that judgement look like.
1 Corinthians 4:5 NIV
[5] Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.
God judges our heart. Yes, we can do all the right things, but it is our heart that matters. However, in God's eyes the matter of the heart that is judged is have we given our hearts to Jesus. This is what should influence our choices. When we think about the example that we set as being something that God can use to show Jesus to someone who is lost, it should influence our choices. That is different than doing things to please humans or having concern for a person's opinion of us. This is realizing that we will all be judged when the Lord returns and that we should have a heart like Jesus for the lost. If we know that the person we are dealing with is lost and that Jesus could return that day a heart like Jesus would want us to say and do things that would show them Jesus. We would want them to know Jesus in light of His judgement.
