1 Corinthians 6:1-8
1If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people? 2Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? 3Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! 4Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? 5I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? 6But instead, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!
7The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? 8Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters.
Tonight we were talking about John 7:37-39 & Matthew 5:13-16. Matthew about being salt and light. Not hiding our light but putting it out there for everyone to see that it may glorify our Father in heaven. John about Jesus offering Himself as the source of living water. We talked about how putting your light on a stand when we speak and act like Jesus. And that salt is a flavorful preservative when used in the right quantities. The lives that we live directly influence the opinions of the lost. And the only way we can be light in darkness and salt to the unsavory is when we let the Spirit of God that is coming from Jesus guide us.
I think about these concepts as I read this passage about not taking each other to court. What kind of witness are we if we trust an overarchingly ungodly court to preside over our disputes. God has given us clear direction in how we are to act and if we live as salt and light lead by the Spirit of God, we should be able to address one another as we are taught to. With Christ-like love. When there are conflicts, we should be able to resolve them as brother and sisters in Christ. Matthew 18:15-17 tells us how we should handle sin against one another. If it gets to the point that a person needs to be treated like an unbeliever even, then would it not be more Christ-like to let a matter go and forgive them. They may not realize what they are doing but if you are being led by the Spirit then you do know what you are doing. So be like Jesus so that others can see Jesus in you.
