1 KINGS 17:8-20:22
1 Kings 17:13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”
15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.
I love stories where we can see God calling someone to do something that they are not equipped to do and when the person responds in obedience He provides everything they need, even beyond what they would think would be an adequate provision. Today I am on the first day of a mission trip with our youth group kids and during devotional time this morning we read the story of Moses at the burning bush. When God called Him, Moses had a crisis of belief where he asked how he could be the one to do this and we know how God used his obedience to save the Israelites. He had given Moses everything he needed every step of the way. If this widow would have only considered and responded to what she knew and understood she would have refused to give up the last of her provisions. It is like the story of the little girl holding onto a little teddy bear and Jesus is reaching out asking her to give it to Him. But she holds onto it tighter and says but I love him and keeps saying no I love him. And Jesus is holding onto a huge teddy bear that He would give her if she gives up the little one. Had this woman not given up what she thought was the last of her provisions she would have missed out on this great miracle. All because her limited human mind was incapable of thinking of this kind of solution.
