2 KINGS 2:1-25
2 KINGS 4:1-44
2 Kings 4:42 A man came from Baal Shalishah, bringing the man of God twenty loaves of barley bread baked from the first ripe grain, along with some heads of new grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” Elisha said.
43 “How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked.
But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the Lord says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’” 44 Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.
I wonder if the disciples or any of the Jewish leaders thought of this story when Jesus fed the multitudes. As we read stories of the prophets I can see how people would think He was a prophet. The prophets performed miracles in the power of God. But Jesus performed bigger miracles than any of the prophets. He fed 4000 & 5000 men plus women and children. Elisha only fed 100 soldiers. Prophets raised people from the dead. We recently read about Elijah and Elisha raising boys from the dead. But Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead 4 days later. If I remember correctly, it was when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead that He established that His power over death was greater than the prophets. Jewish tradition believed that the soul stayed around the body for 3 days hoping to return. That was the final straw that brought the Jewish leaders to the point of being willing to kill Him. I love how the Old Testament foreshadows all that Jesus does. The entire bible is one continuous story about Jesus.
