Romans 8:5-8 NIV

[5] Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. [6] The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. [7] The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. [8] Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

This is what I was talking about yesterday. There is peace that transcends all understanding when you live in accordance with the Spirit. It doesn't mean that you will live a perfect life and never sin. Instead, you will have a heart that desires to please God. When we do sin, we should have remorse and want to repent. But we do not have to beat ourselves up over it because we no longer live in hostility to God. He does not hold that sin against us so we can live in the peace of knowing we are forgiven.

Romans 8:9-11 NIV

[9] You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. [10] But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. [11] And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

The desire to live in the realm of the Spirit will be evident in the change in us. A believer's life should be different from the life of a non-believer. Without a change in your heart that is evident through your actions the world will not recognize that there is any difference between you and the lost. How can we serve Christ and live to make Him known if we are no different than those who don't know Him.

Romans 8:14-16 NIV

[14] For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. [15] The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” [16] The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

When we put our faith in Jesus we become part of God's family. We are adopted into the family of God and can call out "Daddy". When a child is adopted as an older child they can struggle with calling their adoptive parents mom and dad. It can take time to develop that trust. God has proven Himself loving and faithful over and over again. The more we grow in our faith and learn about Him, the more we come to trust Him the easier it is to trust Him. The Spirit that lives in us will reveal the truth and depth of His love to us so that we can have the peace of knowing that we are being held in the arms of the almighty who loves us as a daddy. The Daddy that we have a heart to please.
