Ecclesiastes 5:1 Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.

I liked this picture because even though it is probably intended for music, it is equally true for who we listen to. I want to be someone that others look at and see Jesus and the only way I can be that is to listen to Him.

The house of God for us is the Church. We should not go there just to go through the rituals of prayer, liturgy, offering, communion, baptism, singing. We need to go there with ears to hear. Expecting to hear from God. Maybe you go to church expecting to hear God speak through the sermon and we should. But we can also listen for Him in all those other things as well. He can speak to our spirit in times of prayer. He can speak through the words of liturgy. When we give our offerings, it should not be just an offering but a sacrifice of surrendering what we have to the Lord. When we participate in the sacraments we should listen for Him to understand the sacredness of them. When we sing whether it is hymns or contemporary songs, they should be to Him and for His glory. He can speak to us through the words and through the Spirit who is directing our song. When we go through the motions to say we were there, and we got it done aren't we the fools who don't even know that we are wrong?
