Psalms 78:8 NIV
[8]They would not be like their ancestors—
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
whose spirits were not faithful to him.
A warning to the Israelites not to be like their ancestors who were unfaithful. They lacked faith in who God is even though He repeatedly performed miracles and proved Himself faithful to them.
Psalms 78:20 NIV
[20] True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?”
They experienced God's provision over and over again, but they still complained and doubted Him. There was a lack of faith that resulted in worry. A lack of faith in the unexplainable, incomprehensible character of God and His promises. How do you experience all that they experienced and doubt Him. As soon as things got difficult or uncomfortable they strayed. Perhaps out of fear and worry. Then they repeatedly turned away from Him and worshiped other Gods. God allowed them to go, and He punished them by not going out with them. Not protecting them. He allowed them to suffer at the hands of their enemies.
Psalms 78:68-70 NIV
[68] but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved. [69] He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever. [70] He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens;
But God only allows them to suffer for so long. Long enough for them to remember Him. Then He beats back the enemy. And He chooses the line of Judah. Asaph is talking about David, but we know that even more significant is that Jesus comes from that line. Jesus is how He turned back for us all.
Luke 12:22-26 NIV
[22] Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. [23] For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. [24] Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! [25] Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? [26] Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
The secret to not worrying is to know and understand the character of God. God's love - omni benevolence - for us is greater than we can understand. When you look at the work of His powerful hand in nature, how everything works together and how He has provided for every creature, we who He considers to be much more valuable are even more loved and cared for. We need to know and trust in God's word and His promises. We need to know and trust in His character. If we do then even when things get difficult or uncomfortable we need not worry.
Luke 12:28 NIV
[28] If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!
Faith is knowing and trusting in those things. Worry is a result of not doing that. When you are feeling worried and fearful look to God's promises. Remember and trust in His character and you will defeat the lies that make you doubt.
