Luke 17:9-10 NIV
[9] Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? [10] So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’ ”
We should have the attitudes of being "unworthy servants". We should have an honest opinion of who we are and the depth of our sin. When we do any work for the kingdom from picking up a piece of paper in the parking lot to serving on a worship team, pastoring, teaching or anything else it is what we should do. We should not have any expectation of accolades or even acknowledgement. If we are responding to our Lord and Savior with a true understanding of our need for a savior, then we would have no need for recognition or reward. Eternity is our reward.
Sadly, in the culture today everyone has some level of entitlement in their hearts. Even those of us who think we are humble and those that we see as humble. Somewhere in our lives we are looking for acknowledgment and the reward for our good works. I guess if you are working a job you should expect to get paid. But if we want to do our jobs as we are called to do, as for the glory of the Lord, we should not expect to be treated well, acknowledged for a job well done or given a bonus when we work extra hard. If you live a loving and humble life, then your unbelieving boss and co-workers are more likely to see Jesus in you when you respond with obedience and grace. I am not saying anyone deserves to be treated poorly in their work or that you shouldn't look for a different job. But while you are there you should work to the best of your ability to the glory of God then you are also working for the Kingdom of God.
Luke 17:11-16 NIV
[11] Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. [12] As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance [13] and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” [14] When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. [15] One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. [16] He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.
We not only must remember the depth of our sinful uncleanness, but the abundance of His grace. We need to understand the fact that we are sick in our sin and we need His healing in our lives. And when we come to understand what He has done for us it should drive us back to Him praising Him in a loud voice over and over again. Out of 10 lepers only 1 who was an outcast to the Jews came back. This one who had and honest picture of himself came to see Jesus for who He really is. His understanding of how sick, sinful and unclean he is and how generous, loving and gracious Jesus is gave him no other option but to praise Him.
May we all have the understanding of the Samaritan leper and run back to Jesus praising Him!!
