As I read through the Psalm today it all seemed to matter. Below is the entire Psalm with my thoughts and comments in parenthesis ( ) and italicized.
Psalms 90:1-17 NIV
[1] Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. [2] Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (You Lord are Creator of all things. You have been and always will be the one true God. You have existed before the world you created and will exist for eternity. This blows my mind and leaves me in awe of Him) [3] You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.” (I am nothing but dust in comparison to you. You are the creator I am your creation. You are the potter I am the clay. Do with me as you will. This humbles me and helps me to better to submit to His will for my life) [4] A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. (My timing is not God's timing. He exists outside the constraints of time. No matter how long I may have to wait for something it is no time at all to Him. No matter how long I am separated from my loved ones who have gone home to be with the Lord when we are reunited in eternity it will be just a blink. This helps me to trust in His timing and to be patient when the answer to a prayer is wait and to be content when the answer is no.) [5] Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death— they are like the new grass of the morning: [6] In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered. (The time in our life is no more than the time that a blade of grass will live in comparison to God. He exists beyond all time and all things and all places. We are mortal and will die but He will never die. We have no way of knowing how much time we have on this earth and should live our lives as though we don't have another day. This makes me want to live for Him every moment.) [7] We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. [8] You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. [9] All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. (We are sinners deserving of your wrath. Your wrath is justified and when we consider our sin we should appreciate the great gift that you gave us. Thank you for Jesus. Thank you for making a way for us to avoid the wrath we deserve for the sins we have and continue to commit. When you look at us you see Jesus not our sins and you show us grace and mercy. This makes me want to be better aware of my sin. So that I might be more aware and grateful for what Jesus has done but also so that I can try to turn from those sins.) [10] Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. (No matter how long or difficult a life I live it is nothing in light of eternity. This makes me think about all those who have gone before me. It may seem like a long time for me to wait to see them but for them it is no time at all. And when I am gone I hope that those who would miss me would find peace in this same thought) [11] If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due. (We do not have to know that power or His anger because of Jesus. This makes my heart break for those who refuse the gift of Jesus. They will know the power of His wrath and will experience it for eternity. After all we are all eternal beings.) [12] Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (If we can look at the truths of who God is and who we are it will help us to understand the importance of numbering our days. Wisdom comes as we know God better. It comes as we come to see ourselves through the eyes of His truth. This makes me want to continue to seek ways to know Him and to make Him known.) [13] Relent, Lord! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. (This makes me cry out Come Lord Jesus.) [14] Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. (AMEN) [15] Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. (Lord we all go through difficult times. Some seem to go through more than others. I think that once we reach our heavenly home this entire life will look like days of affliction because even living the best life here cannot compare to what eternity will be. This makes me glad that He will give us more days of gladness than we can even imagine and our afflictions of the past will have no power over us.) [16] May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. (Show me your deeds. The work of your hands. Help me to recognize where you are working in the world around me. This makes me want to have eyes to see God in all things and a voice to speak out about what I see so that all people especially the children might see His splendor.) [17] May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands. (Your will be done. May your plan and your purpose be set in motion. This makes me wish that God would be willing to take my will away so I wouldn't have to daily make the effort to lay it down before Him. But I guess that He knows why that is how it needs to be done.)
