Psalms 139:17 NIV
[17] How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!
Oh, how precious are His thoughts. Oh, how precious are His words. That is how we can know His thoughts. Oh, how precious is scripture. The words that He has given us to know Him.
2 Samuel 7:8-18 NIV
[8] “Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. [9] I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. [10] And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning [11] and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. “ ‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: [12] When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. [13] He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. [14] I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. [15] But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. [16] Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ ” [17] Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation. [18] Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: “Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?
He has spoken these words to David through his prophet. He received the precious thoughts of the Lord as the Lord reminded him of what He had done. Of who David is in His eyes. And in turn who His offspring are and will be. David could not have understood that the words "Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever" would actually mean for eternity. He knew that the Israelites were God's chosen people and that those people were so numerous that they would continue forever on this earth. I don't see how he could understand that God Himself would place Himself into the line of David's descendants and in turn change exactly what it means to be God's chosen people. That though Jesus he would have a descendant who will reign over those chosen people for eternity.
Acts 10:13-15, 34-35 NIV
[13] Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.” [14] “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” [15] The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
[34] Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism [35] but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.
And that God's chosen people are more than Just the Israelites. His thoughts have been for every one of us who trusts in Jesus. Those precious thoughts are given to us when He reveals them to Peter. How precious are His thoughts that He has made us clean and that He accepts every one of us who fear Him. How precious it is to be chosen by Him.
If there is ever any doubt about who you are and what God thinks of you just listen to His thoughts. His words. Because what He thinks of you is all that matters.
