1 CHRONICLES 23:1-25:31
1 Chronicles 23:1 When David was old and full of years, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.
2 He also gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites. 3 The Levites thirty years old or more were counted, and the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand. 4 David said, “Of these, twenty-four thousand are to be in charge of the work of the temple of the Lord and six thousand are to be officials and judges. 5 Four thousand are to be gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the Lord with the musical instruments I have provided for that purpose.”
1 Chronicles 25:1 David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men who performed this service:
Being king would require many skills. You would expect him to be a good warrior, a skilled negotiator, a strong leader. He would need to know how to delegate work to the most skilled people in his kingdom. David had all those skills, but another one of his greatest skills was his poet's heart and love of music. He understood the importance of praising the Lord. Honoring God caring for his temple and seeking the Lord's guidance through people who could hear from God. He sets Solomon up to be successful as king and sets the example of what to prioritize.
I love that those who were responsible for prophesying were accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Those who are seeking a word from God to share with the people do it by praising Him. It came to my attention this past year when I was asking God for guidance with our women's conference that music is vitally important to me when I am seeking a word from God. He speaks to me through the bible and other believers, but He also speaks to me through music. Music is how He drives it home to my heart. I think maybe I should be listening to music more than Christian talk radio for a while. See what He has to say.
