1 CHRONICLES 29:1-22
1 KINGS 1:1-53
1 Kings 1:5 Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, “I will be king.” So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. 6 (His father had never rebuked him by asking, “Why do you behave as you do?” He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.) 7 Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they gave him their support.
Here you have Joab and Abiathar walking in opposition to the kings wishes. Instead of Adonijah Joab and Abiathar going to the king and asking about Adonijah being the next logical successor to the throne they assume it. Now they had to have known the kings wishes because the last couple of days we see that David made public declarations as to Solomon building the temple. But lets assume that they knew that they thought that he didn't have to the be king to build the temple.
We need to be careful not to assume things on our own as well. Our Heavenly King has a plan that may not be logical in our eyes but it is right. When we seek council of people who are also not going to the King for guidance we may think we are doing the right thing but we could be very much in the wrong. I am thinking that the section in parenthesis was there to say that Adonijah has been allowed to do whatever he wanted. It looks like David had a weakness for women and for his children. I don't think he did much to discipline them in everyday life. That was probably up to the moms. And his mom surely wanted him to be king. Fortunately we have a King who has no weaknesses and is always right in how He loves us.
1 Kings 1:51 Then Solomon was told, “Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon and is clinging to the horns of the altar. He says, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’”
52 Solomon replied, “If he shows himself to be worthy, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground; but if evil is found in him, he will die.” 53 Then King Solomon sent men, and they brought him down from the altar. And Adonijah came and bowed down to King Solomon, and Solomon said, “Go to your home.”
Solomon was a wise man and God was with him giving him discernment to the heart of his brother. When we look to our Heavenly King He will give us wisdom and discernment as well.
