Mark 1:16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

When reading about John the Baptist in John (below) I was reminded that Andrew had told Peter about Jesus before the he was called to be a disciple in the reading today. But I was surprised that this is when he told him that he would be called Cephas. But this is not when He changed Simon's name. Reading this chronologically I didn't understand why they don't have Luke 1-11 also in this reading. Which is the scripture of the great catch of fish when Jesus calls Andrew, Peter, James and John. In this reading it goes into other miracles including the healing of Simon Peter's mother-in-law and tomorrows reading has Luke's version of their calling so they must be two different events.

John1:40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).

If this is chronologically accurate that would mean Andrew who was a follower of John the Baptist was there when Jesus was baptized and he went and told his brother Simon. He then brought Simon to meet Jesus and Jesus called Him by name and told him that he would have a new name in the future. Then they went about their everyday lives. Then one day Jesus showed up, and He called them from their boats, and they went and followed Him as Jesus went about teaching and performing miracles that included healing of Simon's mother-in-law. It was a short term of time with Jesus. They must have continued to fish to provide for their families. Tomorrow we will read about a second time that Jesus calls them but this time He provides for them and their families so that they don't have to return to fishing and can follow Him full time.

I never realized that these were different. Have you ever felt that God was calling you to serve in some way and you are willing but you don't have the time and resources to do it as much as you would like. When it is time for you to do more and be more available God will provide what you need to do it. Thank you Lord.
