Philippians 4:6-8 NIV

[6] Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. [7] And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. [8] Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

This entire book is packed with wisdom worth memorizing. These verses are some of my favorites. I may not be able to name chapter and verse when I need them, but they are words that Ian and do recite to myself as well as pray over people. I especially am reading and rereading v. 8 right now. I am going to each whatever and thinking about things in those areas. There is no better way to find peace in my mind that is constantly trying to spin around to anything but these things. The best way to battle the lies is to think about whatever is true. The best way to battle pride is to think about whatever is noble. The best way to battle all the sinful temptations is to think about whatever is right, pure, lovely, admirable. The best way to stay focused on God is to think about what is excellent or praiseworthy. He is worthy of all our praise. His excellence is beyond our comprehension.

Philippians 4:10-13 NIV

[10] I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. [11] I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. [12] I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. [13] I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

I love these verses and think they should always be looked at together. Otherwise, it becomes easy to forget that verse 13 is not about empowerment but interdependence. It is not about achievement but about perseverance. It is not about satisfaction it is about contentment in all things. I love reading full chapters. I think context also helps with memorization and meditation. May the word of God be written on our hearts and flow freely from our lips.
