John 5:5, 16-18 NIV

[5] One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.

[16] So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. [17] In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” [18] For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

There are people who say that Jesus never claimed to be God. But that is not true. Jesus indirectly and directly claims to be God many times. The Jewish leaders recognize that that is what He is doing here. I expect that John mentions that here because he knows that there are going to be non-Jews reading this and that they may not understand that. And in turn, not understand why the Jewish leaders would persecute Him for that. Only God heals. Only God can forgive sins. And the Jewish leaders knew it.

John 5:24 NIV

[24] “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.

Only God can judge and has the power over death and life. Belief in Jesus is given eternal life.

John 5:41-42 NIV

[41] “I do not accept glory from human beings, [42] but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.

Only God can know the hearts of a person. He knows our hearts and that is how He evaluates our faith. We can say and do all kinds of things that make us look like a believer, but it is what is in our hearts that matters.
