^{1John 1:5} This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. ⁶ So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. ⁷ But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

This seems to sum up today's reading. How we live our lives and how we treat each other is a direct reflection of where we are living. We either are children of the light or children of the darkness. Of course, we must profess that we believe in Jesus but if it is not in our hearts we will still be lost in darkness. But if we are truly in Christ then we are in the light and are cleansed from our sins and that will change us. It may not always be easy to stay in the light but when we are tempted to the dark side we have God Himself through the Spirit living inside us that will help us to stay in the light if we will allow Him.
