Mark 4:37-41 NIV

[37] A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. [38] Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” [39] He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. [40] He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” [41] They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Isn't this the response we have to storms in our lives. Just like yesterday's post where God is the source of victory He is also the eye of the storm that we can trust in. Jesus was sleeping because He is the eye, the calm. He knows there is nothing that He can't see them through. I'm glad that the disciples knew they could go to Jesus when it got scary but instead of saying please help us, we know you can, they said "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" They accuse Him of not caring. How often we get mad at God because we are going through a difficult time, blaming Him and accusing Him of not caring about our suffering. Or have you ever heard anyone say that God is mad at them and that is why they are going through their struggles. As though God would alter what is best for all time in order to punish them. Or as though God is not all loving and all good. If we truly trust in Him and His sovereignty, then we need to realize that when things get difficult it is not about us. It's about eternity. Everything we go through God can use for our good ad His glory. The literal storm that the disciples went through was scary, but God used it to show them and to show us that He has power over everything. The power that they witnessed through this storm was so amazing that it filled them with a since of fear. An awe-struck fear. We know that is the kind of fear that it is because they say, "Even the wind and the waves obey him!" It is normal to fear things we don't understand, things that are bigger and greater than we are. But Jesus has reveals to us that the depth of His love that is as great and reliable as His power over all creation. A love that would result in all that He endured for us is also impossible for us to understand. But because of His consistent, reliable faithfulness through all of time we can trust in what we don't understand. When we are going through a figurative storm I think He says the same thing to us. "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have not faith?" It's like we are saying to Him I see what you have done and I read your words but no matter how many times you are faithful my fear is greater than my faith. So next time you are at war or going through a storm I pray your faith will be greater than your fear and that the only fear you will feel is the reverent fear of awe as you trust is Jesus and rest in the calm of His arms.
