Genesis 39:10

'She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible. '

Genesis 39:11-12

'One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work. She came and grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house. '

Potiphar’s wife was not just a temptation she was a persistent temptation. She tried to wear him down. When we talk about sin and how to fight it often we say to remove yourself from the sin or remove the sin from your life. He was in a position that he could not avoid her completely and he couldn't remove her. It was her house. So, he did the best that he could to avoid her. And when he couldn't avoid her because she cornered him and tried to force him to give in, he ran. If you wonder how a teenage boy could resist the temptation to sleep with a beautiful woman who is throwing herself at him, he was no ordinary young man. He was a young man who had a faith in God that was grounded in his experience with him. He saw all the things in his life to be part of God's plan to bring about all that He had shown Joseph in his dreams. He saw God's faithfulness in protecting him from death at the hands of his brothers. He saw God's faithfulness in how no matter what situation he found himself in he was successful. No one can have a faith like this and recognize God's hand in their life unless they are daily doing things to know God. We live in a world full of temptations that we can't avoid. They try to wear us down. What is the temptation that is persistently trying to wear you down? If we focus on knowing the God of the universe who created us and loves us by being in His word, praying, praising, and being with the body of Christ. Then we will be able to stand on solid ground when tempted. A rock takes a lot more time to wear away than sand does. Jesus is our rock. So, focus on who God is, what He has done, and what He tells us through His word, His Sprit and His people and you will not be worn down but will stand on solid ground and overcome temptation.

As I catch up on the blog, today’s verse caught my eye about Joseph being in prison. This especially hit my heart because after just a few short days of feeling pretty good, I find myself up in pain most of the night again hobbling around on I hip flared with swelling from my RA. Limping about my house with a cane when just yesterday I was moving about pain-free and here’s what I thought when I read that scripture.

Genesis 39:21–23

Joseph did not choose the prison, yet the prison did not define him. Scripture tells us that “the Lord was with Joseph” even there—so much so that Joseph was entrusted with responsibility, authority, and purpose in the very…
