Matthew 19:14-15 NIV

[14] Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” [15] When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.

Yesterday Matthew 18:3-4 also talked about being like children. In verse 3 it says "unless you change and become like little children" you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. I was so focused on verse 4 that I didn't give much thought to verse 3. As a new Christian you may not be a fully obedient child that understand everything about what it means to surrender to Him but there should be a change. We cannot go from the broken sinful people void of God who are living according to our sinful nature to children of God with the spirit of God living in us and not change. Just as Jesus blessed these children and put His hands on them, He blesses us when we come to Him and put our faith in Him. He touches us and fills us with His Holy Spirit. That is how we know that we have access to the kingdom of heaven. Our good, good Father has a home for us and will never turn us away. Just as a child who has good parents has the peace of knowing that they have a home to come to.

Matthew 19:21-23 NIV

[21] Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” [22] When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. [23] Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.

The opposite of being like a child is being like the rich man. The person who sees all that he has as his. I worked for it. I earned it. I deserve it. Someone who is so self-reliant and self-focused that they don't know how badly they need God. This guy saw his works that he had done and his obedience to the law as enough. Even in that he is full of himself because he did it. We are not to be full of ourselves we are to be full of the Spirit trusting in God's provision and direction in our lives. It is not wrong to have possessions it is wrong to love those possessions more than God. As children who are obedient to our good, good Father then we must be willing to give up anything that He has given us and we are to always to follow Him.
