Matthew 6:28-32 NIV

[28] “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. [29] Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. [30] If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? [31] So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ [32] For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

I think we have a tendency to use these verses to encourage people to trust God to provide for them and take care of them. I think that we should rely on God to meet our needs and not worry about things because He absolutely can provide all that we need. But don't forget the rest of it. Jesus was saying that the unbelievers worry about stuff. They pursue food, drink, clothing, all the stuff. Those things have become their God. That is where our worry comes from. When we are thinking more about things of this world than we are about Jesus and kingdom of heaven we are no different than the pagans. Jesus doesn't just say don't worry about these things He tells us what we should do instead.

Matthew 6:33 NIV

[33] But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

There are a lot of things that people do to pursue and assure their provision of things and when things don't work the way they planned, they worry. But if we do as Jesus says "seek first his kingdom and his righteousness" then He will give us all that we need as well. Our ability to struggle and not worry is not something we can just decide to do. It is something that comes as the result of doing what we are supposed to do. The way to be able to not worry is to not make those things into idols in our lives. Instead, we need to do first things first. Live for the kingdom and pursue righteousness. That is the first thing we need to do. When we do that the things of the world lose their power over our fear and worry. When your eyes are on the kingdom and the King, the things of this world are pointless, and we will be content with whatever God does supply.
