1 Kings 8:41-43 NIV

[41] “As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name— [42] for they will hear of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm—when they come and pray toward this temple, [43] then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name.

Solomon in his wisdom knew that all the people of the earth needed to hear about the Lord. That they might pray to Him, hear from Him and in turn know Him by name and fear Him. Long before Jesus gentiles were coming to know the Lord and they did it in much the same way that we do today.

We heard about Jesus through preaching, teaching, testimonies and the bible. So, we pray to Him. We ask Him to save us and He does. Just as Solomon asked the Lord to do whatever the foreigner asks Jesus does what we ask. Sometimes we pray to Him asking for things before we ask Him to save us. Much like Boaz cared for Ruth before she knew who He was, Jesus cares for us before we know Him. Once we hear from Him and believe in Him, we can come to know Him by many names as we experience Him. And knowing Him should cause us to fear Him with a sense of reverence and awe.

I love how well Solomon knew the Lord. He understood His sovereignty. He knew that God is in control of all things so much so that he did not take credit for building the temple. He gave the Lord the credit for accomplishing what He wanted through Solomon. Solomon oversaw the building of the temple, but He knew that the Lord was the one who would live there. That is what it looks like to know the name of the Lord and to fear Him. It is about knowing His greatness and putting Him in the rightful place in your heart and your life. Your body is the temple of the Lord.

May you get to know Jesus by many names and allow all that knowledge to help you place Him where He belongs in your heart and life. On the throne.
