Romans 7:14-15 NIV
[14] We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. [15] I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.
If you have done any bible reading in Romans, this is one of the scripture that you will remember. One it is a bit of a tongue twister. But also, we can all relate to it. I know when I am referencing this it is usually in talking about the things that I do that are not Christ like. Unkindness, criticism, selfishness etc. Even though I know how I am supposed to respond and things I am supposed to do I don't always do them. But today I am thinking of it a little deeper.
Romans 7:16-20 NIV
[16] And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. [17] As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. [18] For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. [19] For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. [20] Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
After a couple of conversations about trusting in God I am also looking at it from that perspective. We know that God is all knowing, all powerful, in charge of all things and that we should trust in Him because He knows the big picture and knows every possible outcome. It seems that if we really know that and live it that we should never be impatient, worried, disappointed or anything else. One of the people I was talking to had made the comment that they know all that to be true, but her flesh still worries. Our sinful nature wants to be in control. Our desire is to do what the Spirit would have us do, trust God. But we struggle with doing that constantly because of the sin that is in us. As long as we are on this earth it will be a continuous battle. Our scripture for bible study tonight was John 14:25-27
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
The peace that Jesus gives us is that we are no longer at war with God. We have the Spirit of God to remind us of the truth so that even when we are struggling with trusting Him we will know that we are not alone. Even when we are not doing the good that we want to do we do not have to worry about being at war with Jesus. There is a peace that only comes from our relationship with Him. Now we can rejoice because even when we do miss the mark Jesus is still walking with us through it. That is a peace that our earthly minds cannot understand because if anyone hurt us or did as much against us as we have done to Jesus we would not walk with them in love we would lash out and turn against that person.
The other scripture for bible study tonight was Philippians 4:4-7 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
When we feel the pull of flesh and are struggling to do the good that we should do, rejoice, pray, give thanks, and may the peace of God that transcends all understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
