JOHN 8:21-59

LUKE 10:1-11:13

John 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

Harsh truths spoken to those who refuse to even consider Jesus for who He is. They are hard hearted and unable to see the truth. They would rather believe lies than the truth that Jesus lays out before them. The same thing is happening every day right where we live. The enemy wants his children to die in their sin. He is a liar and those who do not know Jesus believe those lies. The biggest lie is that Jesus is not the way the truth and life. The evidence of Jesus truth is all around them and available to anyone who will look for it but the children of the devil cannot see it for all the lies. It is heart breaking to think that those who are not following Jesus are children of the devil, but this is the truth. This was so hard to read and think of my loved ones who are not following Jesus. Lord, please save them.

Luke 10:18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Jesus saw Satan fall from heaven and make the choice to disobey God. He knows that there is a battle going on for our souls. But those who believe like His disciples can join Him in His work. Jesus gave them power. He can bestow that power on any believer. Those who know Him and follow Him are often given the ability to do things they would not normally even consider doing on their own. When you experience the power of Christ in your life be careful to give Jesus the glory. Rejoice in it but not it the act, rejoice in who Jesus is, and the fact He has chosen you and allowed you to be part of the work that He is doing.

Luke 10:30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.

In the context of thinking about those who were not believing Jesus' teaching being sons of the devil when I read this I thought of the priest and the Levite as being unbelievers. I know that they could not do their jobs if they touched a dead body and that is the explanation some may use when explaining their actions. But in truth if they knew Jesus they would have known that the right thing to do was to help the man and they would have done it regardless. The fact that they needed to stay "clean" was a lie from their father that would rather believe. Those who know the shepherd know His voice and know His will.

Never thought of this parable in these terms.
