LUKE 11:14-12:34
Luke 11:16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
Last night at the Table we discussed James 4:13-17. Which this reminds me of. It talks about not making plans and boasting about them. Instead, we need to acknowledge God's sovereignty. Only He knows if we will live to see our plans come about. Also, it talks about how fleeting our lives are. Therefore, we should not boast about what we plan to do and what we have accomplished but instead we should acknowledge God and give Him the glory as we trust Him to bring about His will. We should also be willing to let go of our plans without concern or upset.
The rich fool in this story was so focused on his plans and what he had and what he was going to do with all that he had. As a result, he missed out on enjoying all that with someone and having others in his life. His plans and his things were more important. If we are holding on so tightly to our plans that we will go out of our way to make them happen like building bigger barns, God may not stop us. Just as the fool died alone after living a lonely life, we can miss out on blessings that God might have in store for us. If we would be willing to let go of what we think is important and what we think we should do, it is a way of being rich toward God because we are willing to give up all we have for whatever He has planned.
After I picked out this scripture and started thinking down this path my friend Margie who was at the Table last night shared with me the below article. Commenting that it is interesting that this was sent to her the day after we discussed the very scripture. If you would like to dig deeper into this idea, give it a read it also mentions the above scripture
Luke 12:22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
I had never realized that the rich fool story was right before the do not worry passage and they are so important to read together. I know some people who feel the need to make plans and if they don't have things planned out, they worry. Even when things are planned out if it doesn't go as they had planned, they get anxious. When you are rich toward God trusting His sovereignty holding loosely to your plans you understand that food and clothing are nothing. God cares for birds, flowers, plants and everything else that He created. He created you above all those things so how much more would He care for you. If instead of seeking after the things we want or think we need as the non-believer does, we seek after the kingdom of God trusting that He knows everything we need, we won't need to build storehouses and trust in our plans. And we will have nothing to worry about.
If you struggle with worry and anxiety, I encourage you to meditate of these scripture and others that are mentioned in the article. But first talk to God asking Him to help you to understand His word, His love and His sovereignty. As you meditate on His word journal what God speaks to your heart.
