JOHN 11:38-57

LUKE 17:11-18:8

John 11:41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

Jesus is preparing the way for the path to the cross. The raising of Lazarus from the dead is when the Jewish leaders make the decision that Jesus must die. Jesus' words here are surely received by those who come to believe in Him, but they also reinforce the Jewish leaders' opinion of Him.

John 11:43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

When Lazarus came hopping out of the tomb he couldn't see and he couldn't walk because his entire body was wrapped in a sheet. His legs were wrapped together and his head was wrapped in a cloth as well. He heard his shepherds voice and followed it. Him coming back to life after 4 days was a mighty show of power. Before him no one has ever done that before. Not only did the Jewish leader have it out for Jesus after this but also Lazarus.
