Exodus 10:1-2 NIV

[1]Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs of mine among them [2]that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.”

Exodus 10:7 NIV

[7] Pharaoh’s officials said to him, “How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the Lord their God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?”

I used to think it was cruel of God to harden Pharaoh's heart but I don't think that anymore. The fact that Pharaoh's officials recognized the need to let the Israelites go and Pharaoh was not seeing it is proof of the God's hand in it all. Pharaoh was not a stupid man. He was prideful and probably didn't like being told what to do but he would have to be stupid not to see that things were getting worse and worse. God said that he would harden Pharaoh's heart and it wasn't just so the Israelites and the Egyptians would see the His power. He looks to the future through all of time on earth and ultimately eternity. He did it so they could tell their children and grandchildren. And that continues to their children and grandchildren telling their children and grandchildren. The power of God is revealed through this story all through time as it is now recorded in the bible and shared from generation to generation all over the world. It is a story that He will use to bring people into the kingdom of heaven. We ask why God would let certain things happen. Because He knows everything till the end of time and how each breath and movement and word will influence even those who are the last generation to exist before His return and influence who will be in heaven. We are in no position to ask that because we can't even comprehend what it is like to know all things. And we are in no place to tell God what he should do because one thing that we would change could change the eternal destiny of any number of people. It is mind blowing when I think about it and since it is about God it should be mind blowing.
